Yalumba Stakes

Also known as the Caulfield Stakes, the Yalumba Stakes is a Group One thoroughbred horse race held at the Caulfield Racecourse every October, and forms part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club, the Yalumba Caulfield Stakes is worth $400,000 and draws the nation’s best stayers over 2,000 metres to compete under weight-for-age conditions.

Held on the Caulfield Guineas Day – the first of three race days in the Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival, two other top quality Group One races go ahead alongside the Caulfield Yalumba Stakes, being the Toorak Handicap and of course the Caulfield Guineas.

The Yalumba Stakes was originally run in 1886, and up until 1972 changed its distance several times before sticking at the 2,000 metre mark. It has been a Group One event since 1979 – firmly planted as a prestigious race on the Australian calendar and is often used as an indicator race for the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate held one and two weeks later respectively.
